Energy Drinks/Supplements

Uncategorized Feb 26, 2018

Hi BioSquad!

For this week’s blog I would like to talk to you about energy drinks. So many people always complain of being tired these days and turn to energy drinks to power through the day. However, those drinks are loaded with artificial sugar and empty calories that our bodies don’t need. The caffeine content is usually very high in these drinks as well and can be equivalent to several cans of soda. There have been reports of people having heart palpitations and even seizures from drinking too many energy drinks.

I would like to share with you some natural alternatives to energy drinks that I find to be really helpful for those mornings when you just need an extra boost. I really love black coffee. One of my favorite brands of ready-made coffee is the Chameleon brand! I love their cold brew coffee, it is so good and really wakes me up and helps me start the day. My favorite one is the organic espresso ready to drink coffee.

Calorie Counting

Uncategorized Feb 19, 2018

Hi BioSquad!

For today’s blog, I would like to talk about calories. That dreaded word we all hate hearing. Is there a magic number? Do we really need to be counting calories? Well, yes and no. You need to know how much food your body requires but you don’t need to get hung up on those numbers too much as it can sometimes stall your weight loss efforts when you get too worried about counting every little thing. It also takes the joy out of eating when you have to track everything you consume. On the other hand, if you’re an athlete or you participate in intense workouts five days a week, you have to make sure you eat enough. More important than how many calories you’re eating is the QUALITY of the calories in the food you are consuming. An apple will affect your body differently than a processed protein bar will. It’s so important to eat clean and choose healthy, whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible.

So, how do we figure out how many...

The truth about eliminating food groups.

clean dairy food whole30 Feb 12, 2018

Hey BioSquad!

For today’s blog, I would like to tackle the topic of dieting. We all hate that word, right? I’m a huge proponent of eating clean and eating organic whenever possible. I like to call eating a lifestyle rather than a diet. Because we can’t eat healthy and balanced for a few weeks and then immediately start eating biscuits and gravy and bacon the next week and expect to stay fit or have any energy to get through our workouts.

I think it is best to keep a balanced diet, including green vegetables, apples, berries, almonds, cashews, walnuts, flax and chia seeds, lean organic meat, organic eggs, beans, etc. Many people, in an effort to lose weight, start cutting out certain food groups, like carbs for example. I do think it is good to cut out bad carbohydrates like white bread, white sugar, anything processed, and stay away from grains if they bother your digestive system or you have celiac, etc. However, sweet potatoes, and healthy unprocessed...

Sugar

Uncategorized Nov 11, 2017

Hi BioSquad!

For this week’s nutrition blog, I would like to talk about white sugar and its effects on your body. Now, we all know that cookies, cakes, cheesecake, ice cream, and any kind of dessert tastes really good but the consequences of consuming food made with white sugar can be disastrous to your health.

White sugar can cause abdominal obesity, high LDL cholesterol, elevated blood sugar, etc. When you consume a lot of sugar, white sugar in particular,  it causes spikes in insulin which can eventually lead to things like diabetes if consumed continually. Have you ever eaten a white bagel with cream cheese in the morning and then experienced a “crash” a few hours later where you feel tired and sluggish? That would be the effects of consuming white sugar. Sugar breaks down quickly and is absorbed into your bloodstream which causes a crash from the overload of sugar spiking your insulin levels. Of course, sugar tastes delicious but it is bad for...

Gluten-Free

Uncategorized Nov 11, 2017

Hey BioSquad!

This week, I would like to focus on gluten free foods and recipes! Let’s talk about gluten. Well, grains in general. Grains have only been cultivated in the last ten thousand years and most of them are inflammatory and cause a great deal of distress to our digestive system. I personally stick to a Paleo diet because I believe it’s healthier for our bodies and it makes sense to follow the diet of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. I stick to a high protein/gluten free/dairy free diet because that is what works best for me.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, oats, barley, and rye. Gluten is a binder in many products and it is what makes bread and baked goods soft and chewy. Many people have gluten intolerance and don’t even realize they are intolerant. I believe that what we put into our bodies is very important and I don’t think gluten should be something we consume. Obviously, for those who have celiac disease, gluten is something they must...

The Skinny on Fat!

Uncategorized Nov 11, 2017

Hey BioSquad!

For my second blog, I would like to talk about fat! Yes, FAT! Don’t let that word scare you. First of all, fat doesn’t make you fat. Contrary to popular belief, fat (the right kind, anyway) actually helps your body burn fat and can get you to your fitness goals faster. In the 80’s, the “low-fat” craze began and the high-carbohydrate diet took the diet world by storm. At the time, it seemed like cutting the fat was a good idea if you wanted to lose weight. But, we now know that the real science behind weight loss is burning more calories than you eat. It seems simple, right? When everybody was cutting fat out of their diet, they were eating more carbohydrates. This is really bad for blood sugar and causes spikes in insulin levels, which causes your body to store fat. Which brings me to the point of why you NEED fats in your diet. Fat slows down the absorption of carbohydrates into your bloodstream and it also keeps you fuller longer....

Dairy Products

Uncategorized Nov 11, 2017

Hey BioSquad!!

This week, I would like to talk to you about dairy. It’s a subject I’m passionate about and it’s also very controversial these days. Milk is pasteurized, which means it is heated and loses all of its enzymes. Milk is meant for baby calves. Think about it, no other species drinks milk as adults. It’s strictly for growth and development for the first year or so of life and nothing else. If you knew what went on in dairy farms where milk is mass produced for human consumption, you wouldn’t want that in your system. Cows are treated terribly, most of them are diseased and they are forced to pump milk for hours on end in order to deliver gallons upon gallons of milk to be sold in stores. Whatever is being pumped into the cow, whether it is antibiotics or hormones, etc.  is going into the milk and into the bodies of those who choose to consume that milk. Even organic milk is bad because dairy in general is harmful to health. It has been...

Nutrition Blog

Uncategorized Nov 11, 2017

Hey BioSquad!

Welcome to my first blog! Each week, I will cover a new topic. I decided to start a blog that will focus on nutrition/food/health. They all go hand in hand and how you feel directly correlates with what you eat. As a trainer, I get asked a lot about food and diet.

For my first topic, I want to talk about food and what you should be eating. How you fuel your body is really important. What you eat will not only affect your health and workouts but progress in the gym too. As Hippocrates said, “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” Your whole body benefits from eating the right foods. I believe in eating whole and natural foods as much as possible. A lot of people eat protein bars when they’re on the go but there are a lot of ingredients that we can’t even pronounce in those bars and loads of sugar that our body doesn’t need! When you consume ingredients in food that your body doesn’t recognize, it...
